Joakim Noah is scheduled to leave for France on Monday to begin preparation for a stint with Team France in the European Championships in Lithuania, according to a source close to the situation.

Noah, who has dual U.S. and French citizenship, is expected to be overseas for the next two months as the NBA lockout carries on.

France opens play in the European Championships on Aug. 31 against Latvia. The tournament runs through Sept. 18.

Noah, 26, averaged 11.7 points and 10.4 rebounds in 48 regular season games for the Bulls last season. A year after missing 18 games with plantar fasciitis, Noah missed 34 games with injuries last season, including a torn thumb ligament.

With that not an option this summer because of the NBA lockout that prohibits contact between management and players, Noah is going overseas. He joins Luol Deng, Omer Asik and possibly rookie Nikola Mirotic as those committed to their respective national team stints.

KFC seems to be checking Dwyane Wade’s posts on Twitter.

Miami’s one of the “Big Three”, Dwayne Wade is one of the many big-time players who is dismayed with the lockout happening in the NBA. The Miami basketball star tweeted June 30 — after the NBA announced a player lockout — asking,

“Any1 hiring?” The fast food company, which at one point actually did employ Wade, replied.

KFC has sent Dwayne Wade an offer letter.

“We couldn’t help but notice your recent tweet about looking for a new line of work in light of the lockout,” KFC wrote in the letter. “We’re always looking for folks with precisely your qualifications — initiative, teamwork and the ability to make buckets in a hurry,” KFC U.S. general manager John Cywinski say in the letter.

While KFC acknowledges that they wouldn’t be able to match the salary of a star basketball player, they told Wade that in exchange for him working a shift or two for them as an honorary captain at a drive-thru window, they would donate $250,000 in his name to Colonel’s Scholars.

It wouldn’t be Wade’s first time in a KFC uniform. Wade told Sports Illustrated in 2006 that his only other job before becoming an NBA superstar was working at a KFC in the Chicago area.

“We’ve always been proud to call you a former KFC employee and, it goes without saying we’d love to have you back on our team dishing out the World’s Best Chicken, like you dish out assists on the court,” reads the letter.

Rick Maynard, public relations manager for KFC, said that they haven’t received a response from Wade yet, but they are hopeful, and that they’d love to put him to work for a shift or two.

If the NBA lockout is not ended by the scheduled start of the 2011-12 season, Hawks reserve center Zaza Pachulia could end up playing in Turkey in the short term.

Pachulia, who is under contract with the Hawks for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons for a total of about $10 million, said he has a “verbal agreement” to play next season for Turkish club Besiktas.

“They have interest, I have interest and we have talked about price,” Pachulia said. “It’s not official now.”

Besiktas also has an agreement with New Jersey Nets guard Deron Williams.

Pachulia said the contract with Besiktas would immediately terminate when NBA owners and players agree on a new labor deal. The contract also would include some kind of insurance for Pachulia since his guaranteed contract with the Hawks would not be protected in case of an injury sustained while playing in another league.

FIBA, basketball’s world governing body, has yet to rule on whether NBA players under contract would be cleared to sign contracts with other leagues during the lockout. NBA commissioner David Stern said during the season the league would not attempt to block players from playing elsewhere.

“We are not going to do anything to affect our contract with the NBA,” Pachulia said. “That’s my life right now.”

Unlike most NBA players, Pachulia would not face culture shock playing in Europe. He is a native of bordering Georgia, speaks Turkish and holds a passport from the country.

“For me, it feels like going home,” he said. “I played there for six years [as a teenager]. I know a lot of the players, the manager, the coaches. I’m excited.”

Pachulia plans to play for Georgia in European Olympic qualifying this summer. FIBA is expected to announce a plan to insure NBA players who participate in international competitions.

It’s possible more NBA players could decide to play overseas during the lockout. Roger Mason Jr., a players union vice president, told Newsday that Knicks stars Amar’e Stodemire and Carmelo Anthony inquired about playing overseas (though Stoudemire’s agent later said Stoudemire isn’t thinking about making the move).

“I wish none of us [NBA players] would have to deal with these kind of things,” Pachulia said. “But the most important thing is I love the game.”

Sonny Weems has joined Zalgiris Kaunas of Lithuania, signing a contract will keep him in Europe all season rather risk sitting out the entire year if in case NBA lockout lasts.

Roger Montgomery, Weems’ agent, Weems could play 70 games next season between the Lithuanian and Euroleague schedules, a good opportunity for a young player instead of losing the entire year if the NBA and players don’t reach a deal. He didn’t disclose the value of the contract.

Montgomery told his client signed the deal Thursday without an NBA opt-out clause because he believes the league’s uncertain labor situation makes it “in our best interest to unpack our bags and stay the entire year.”

Weems played last season for Toronto and was a restricted free agent. The Raptors extended a qualifying offer, meaning they would maintain the right to match any offer by another team if he returned to the NBA.

Montgomery started looking for opportunities for his players at the urging of the union, which had been telling agents to be prepared for a long work stoppage. He quickly found a match in the Lithuanian champs, a team he described as needing “one little boost to get over that hump” and believes the swingman is that player.

“Sonny will be able to go in and make a true impact,” Montgomery said, helping a team “really in the middle of the pack maybe go to the top of the pack.”

Weems averaged 9.2 points in 59 games for the Raptors last season. Because he is not currently under NBA contract, he is free to make the jump without worry of FIBA approval.
